Conscious Gifting for the Holidays
The holiday gift-giving frenzy has officially begun! For the conscious shoppers among us, the holidays can present a challenge.
You want to get in the holiday spirit, but not having transparency into where your money is going on many of the giftable trinkets you find at big box stores and in Black Friday sales can leave a bad taste in your mouth. There’s also the carbon footprint that many popular toys and fast fashion items leave behind.

So what’s a socially conscious shopper to do? Here, some of our favorite ways to gift give this holiday season while doing good:
Give a gift away
Here’s a way you can turn any gift you choose into a way to do good. After all of the gift-giving has been done in your family, ask the kids to choose one gift to give away to someone less fortunate than them. Find a local shelter, children’s hospital or a Big Brother’s and Big Sister’s program and go with your kids to donate the gift.
Volunteer your time
Make a choice as a family to spend time volunteering as one of your gifts. Reach out to local shelters and hospitals to see if they need additional help during the holidays. If your children are too young to take part in the volunteering, have them help out by baking cookies for residents at an elderly home or by putting together goodie bags for kids at the shelter.

Give the gift of reading
Spending money on books is never a bad idea if you’re looking to consciously gift this holiday season. Whether it’s your favorite fairy tale or a new best-selling picture book, reading together as a family is one of the best ways to bond. If you’re a time-challenged parent, sharing a book with your kids is true quality time. Plus the fact you can get some good cuddling in while reading — it’s a win-win situation!
Find brands that align with your goals
Let’s face it, part of the fun of the holidays is the thrill of unwrapping a new gift. For conscious consumers, it may take a little legwork to discover brands with a social conscious, but they do exist! By purchasing products from a brand that shares your humanitarian views, you can stop feeling guilty about where your money is going.
We love fashion brands like TOMS, which helps people in need with every purchase and Bombas socks, which donates socks to homeless shelters. Here at Lorena Canals, being conscious is at the core of what we do. This is why we started the Sakula project, which gives children in Northern India the chance to attend school through the purchases of our rugs. Our customers get the opportunity to help a child get an education and give them a brighter future.
